Harry Potter enjoyed Pumpkin Pasties with his friends as they traveled on the Hogwart’s Express to school. You can make these popular treats at home with refrigerated pie crusts and some sweet and savory ingredients.
These handheld pumpkin pies are so easy to make using pre-made pie crusts you can pick up at the grocery store. Then just mix together some ingredients, tuck them in the pie dough and in less than 10 minutes you will have hot pumpkin pasties.
Pumpkin pasties are a great snack for Harry Potter birthday parties, movie watching marathons or a wizarding book club meeting.

Sweet or Savory?
There is debate whether pumpkin pasties would be sweet or savory. The book doesn’t mention their taste.
In England, pasties are usually savory, like their popular hand held meat pies.
However, nothing about Harry Potter’s wizarding world is traditional. In the book, he and his friends buy pumpkin pasties on the Hogwart’s Express from the Honeyduke’s Express Trolley, which only serves us sweet treats.
So we can assume that the wizard’s pumpkin pasties would be sweet, but no one knows for sure.
Helpful Tips
- Be sure to use pumpkin puree, not pumpkin pie filling.
- You can roll out the extra dough leftover after cutting to make a few more pasties.
- If you do not want Harry Potter-themed pasties, you can just cut a standard vent hole.
Pumpkin Pasties Recipe
Servings: 10 pasties
Prep: 10 minutes
Cook: 5 minutes
Total time: 15 minutes
Ingredients
- 1 box refrigerated pie dough
- 1 cup pumpkin puree
- 4 Tbs brown sugar
- 1/2 tsp cinnamon
- 1/4 tsp ginger
- 1/4 tsp clove
- 1/4 tsp nutmeg
- 1 egg
- 1 Tbs granulated sugar
Directions
Step One
Preheat oven to 450 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
Step Two
In a medium mixing bowl whisk together the pumpkin, brown sugar, cinnamon, clove, and ginger spices.
Step Three
Lay out your refrigerated pie dough to be flat.
Cut out circles in the pie dough using a cup or glass bowl. The circles should be about 4-5 inches in diameter.
If you have a large circle cookie cutter, you could use that, too.
Step Four
Scoop a heaping tablespoon of pumpkin mixture into the middle of each circle of dough. Fold the dough over in the middle and use a fork to pinch down the outer rim of the pastie to seal it.
As you can see in the photo, some of the pumpkin filling might peek out from the sealed rim. This is okay.
If you don’t want any pumpkin showing outside, you will need to use less filling.
Step Five
Using a sharp knife, cut a lightning bolt on the top of each of your pasties.
Step Six
In a small bowl, whisk 1 egg and 1 tsp of water. Brush the top of each pastie with the egg wash and then sprinkle with a little bit of granulated sugar.
Step Seven
Bake for 5-6 minutes or until golden brown on top.
