Universal Studios Bag Policy: Everything to Know About Backpacks, Fanny Packs and Purses

Unlike Walt Disney World or Disneyland, you cannot bring bags on many rides at Universal Studios. In fact, you can’t bring your phone on some of the roller coasters!

Universal Studios bag rules are much different than other theme parks you might be used to. So it is important to understand the Universal Studios Bag Policy before entering the parks.

Let’s first start with the official bag policies of Universal Orlando and Universal Studios Hollywood:

Universal Orlando Bag Policy

According to Universal Orlando Resort’s Conditions of Entry:

  • All bags, backpacks, purses, packages and items are subject to X-ray and/or additional inspection prior to entering CityWalk or the Theme Park(s). 
  • Suitcases and bags with wheels are prohibited.
  • Hard-sided coolers are prohibited
  • Soft-sided coolers larger than 8.5″ wide X 6″ high X 6″ deep are prohibited

Universal Studios Hollywood Bag Policy

According to Universal Studio’s Hollywood Policies and Restrictions:

  • All bags, backpacks and packages will be X-rayed and/or inspected
  • Suitcases and bags with wheels are prohibited.
  • Soft-sided insulated bags no larger than 8.5″ wide X 6″ high X 6″ deep are allowed
  • Hard-sided coolers are prohibited
  • Soft-sided coolers larger than 8.5” wide x 6” high x 6” deep are prohibited 
  • Coolers, suitcases, and bags with wheels are prohibited

What to Do With Bags at Universal Studios

Universal Studios bag rules allow you to bring in a variety of purses, backpacks and bags to use during the day. We’ve done the research and found the best bags for Universal Studios!

However, just because you can bring them into the theme parks or water park doesn’t mean that you can bring the bags on rides.

Many rides do not allow you to bring a bag, backpack, purse or camera bag. So what can you do?

There are a variety of free lockers and paid lockers throughout Universal Studios. Bags can be stored in the free lockers while you are on the rides.

However the best tip is to bring as little as possible to Universal and put all of your belongings in a fanny pack to wear.

Why?

Because fanny packs are allowed on all but 3 rides in Universal Studios theme parks. It will save you so much time if you just pack less stuff and don’t have to use the lockers. However, that isn’t always easy when you are traveling with kids!

Yes, you can bring a backpack to Universal Studios, but you can’t bring a backpack that has wheels.

Can I Wear A Fanny Pack on Rides at Universal Studios?

Yes, you can wear a fanny pack on rides at Universal Studios as long as it has a three-prong closure.

Can You Bring a Purse on Universal Rides?

A purse is considered a bag and will not be allowed on the rides that prohibit bags.

Do I Need to Use a Clear Bag at Universal?

No, you are not required to use clear bags at Universal Studios theme parks.

Can You Bring Your Phone on Rides at Universal?

You are allowed to bring your phone with you on most rides at Universal Studios as long as it is in your pocket or a fanny pack.

There are three rides at Universal Orlando where you are not allowed to bring any personal belongings, including a phone. The rides are:

  • The Incredible Hulk Coaster
  • Hollywood Rip Ride RockIt
  • Jurassic World VelociCoaster

You will be going through a metal detector and security screening within the queue line at these 3 attractions to make sure that you are not carrying any loose belongings.
